“I’ve been really enjoying the slower pace compared to a bigger city. Medicine Hat is a nice city to spend time in." - Jared Schellenberg.
Jared Schellenberg spent a year in Medicine Hat during an internship at UVAD (Unmanned Vehicle Applied Dynamics) in 2021. He returned to Calgary, Alberta to graduate his program with a degree, and then was offered a permanent position with the aerospace and defence company in Medicine Hat.
He moved to Medicine Hat in 2022 for the job, and grew to love the city’s outdoor activities. Schellenberg often runs the paved trail system in Medicine Hat. With 190+ kilometres of trails, the trail running throughout the coulees brings scenic views and an abundance of wildlife.
“I’ve been really enjoying the slower pace compared to a bigger city. Medicine Hat is a nice city to spend time in,” he says.
With a handful of city parks and six golf courses, Schellenberg has settled nicely into the golfing scene. The golf courses are snug in the coulees, with a few highlighting views of the South Saskatchewan River and the World’s Tallest Tepee, Saamis Tepee.
“I really like going to the nice golf courses here. And I’ve recently gotten into disc golf with the team at work. The city has added a new course, so now there’s even more parks to play at.”
Elkwater in Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park is a short 45 minute drive from Medicine Hat, and Schellenberg enjoys the Park and all the activities it has to offer in the rolling hills.
“I went cross country skiing in Elkwater, which is beautiful. It’s a nice landscape to be close to if you’re a person who likes the outdoors,” he says.
At night, he and his friends will check out local eateries to watch sports. The big screen at Ralph’s Texas Bar & Steakhouse has had the group attend a UFC fight many times.
“I really love the job and living here. The atmosphere is very relaxed. The weather is really nice, and the city is a really good size,” says Schellenberg.
For over three decades, Southeast Alberta has been a trailblazer in aerospace and defense, particularly in Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS).
