Move to Work

Laurel Mayrs

“Medicine Hat is so nice, and it’s great for small and young families. We really love how everyone is so welcoming and friendly.” - Laurel Mayrs

Laurel Mayrs and her family moved to Medicine Hat in 2019, when her husband found a job in his field that allowed for him to be home every night.

They quickly became accustomed to a slower pace of living, while also still having big city amenities nearby. Their new neighbourhood is quiet and welcoming, and the family often explores the many paths and parks in the city.

“The people we’ve met so far seem so nice and welcoming. I never feel I’m in the jumble of the city, and traffic doesn’t exist here. It’s the perfect size — you have everything you need and you can get from one side of the city to the other in 15 to 20 minutes,” says Mayrs.

In the summer, Kin Coulee Park is a favourite spot for the family. Gas City Campground is also a place where the family stays. It’s a nice escape into nature, but is still within city limits. Having young children, Mayrs says it’s nice having their home close to the campground.

“We also love the Big Marble Go Centre. Between the tot time and the ice skating rink, our kids always have so much fun and it’s a great space for them to release some energy,” says the mother of two.

In summer 2022, she kayaked the South Saskatchewan River for the first time. The leisure activity was breathtaking with the beauty of the coulees, and the paddler is eager to return to the water in summer 2023.

“Medicine Hat is so nice, and it’s great for small and young families. We really love how everyone is so welcoming and friendly.”

After their move, Mayrs opened her e-commerce business in 2021, Kays & Co. The name is inspired by their first born son, Kaysen, and her husband is supportive and helpful when it comes to running the business. She's eager and excited to offer her online business in Medicine Hat.

“I made the decision to give the dream a try and create a custom style for headwear.”

Laurel and her family enjoy spending time at the many city parks in Medicine Hat.
